It really is all about this.
No I did not prepare this bird or take this picture, but nothing inspires me like a food challenge. I’M DOIN’ IT!!! I’ll keep you posted on the results as the story unfolds — pictures included.
Seriously, this really is what it’s all about.
You see, when you were young, and your mind was an open book, you were told the ‘Hokey Pokey’ — that’s what it’s all about. Well, now you know. It’s not. Thanksgiving turkey wrapped in bacon — that’s what it’s all about!
Of course, you know that there’s more to life than turkey wrapped in bacon. Thanksgiving is here to remind us of the need to do more than just be thankful for the turkey we have, and be mindful that many, many people in this world will do without turkey, and bacon, and clothes, and shelter, and friendship, and the many, many things we take for granted. We need to be mindful and thankful for everything we have and we need to remember those who are less fortunate than we are by taking advantage of this opportunity God gives us, right before Advent, to seriously commit ourselves to one of the more overlooked precepts of the Church; that is, to actively exercise the corporal and spiritual acts of mercy. Lest we forget what it’s all about.
Charity is not all about saving our own souls, as some cynics would suggest. It is about living the one and only true commandment that Christ gave us which embodies all the precepts of the law to the full: Love God above all things; and love your neighbor as yourself.
When you look at it more closely, there’s always more to it than meets the eye. To love God above all things should entail loving him though and in all things. To love yourneighbor as yourself should entail loving him and her as God loves you, seeing them as God sees them, as infinitely loved children of God, like yourself.
So here are 5 (out of 6) considerations that follow from just considering what it truly is all about — that it really is all about turkey wrapped in bacon, and everything else you can think of that’s wholesome, good, and proper.
- Everything is a gift from God, including turkey, bacon, and a turkey wrapped in bacon.
- The ability to come up with such a thing as a bacon wrapped turkey is a gift, since our ability to be inventive and creative is actually our ability to participate in the creative mind of God, from whom all good things come.
- The sheer joy — mouth watering joy — that comes from just seeing — Nay! Thinking! — of a turkey wrapped in bacon is a gift from God and a sign of God’s spirit that infuses joy within us
- Even if on second thought you thought that turkey wrapped in bacon might produce competing flavors and turn out disasterous in the end, you have to admit that on first sight, you loved the idea!
- Just seeing the preparation of Thanksgiving food makes us want to share, because it’s all about community, fellowship, goodwill, and selfless love — things God freely gives to his rational creatures to share and spread the joy…
Ultimately, it’s all about doing what we were meant to do with God’s gifts. We don’t always see or appreciate God’s providence. When we reflect on it, though, we should come to realize that we are all active participants in God’s providence.
Which brings us to number 6 — which is for you. What’s it all about? (For you?)

What a truly wonderful feast day Thanksgiving is! I wish we had it over here in Europe…… and not just for the tasty looking turkey :-). It is good to remember to thank God for all his many blessings, and to show appreciation to our loved ones for their generosity, love, loyalty etc.

No Thanksgiving holiday here in the UK, of course, but this post reminds us that we all have many, many things to be thankful for. Not least for the food on our plates and the roof over our heads when half the world has neither. And of course, as believers, our ultimate thanksgiving is for Our Lord Jesus Christ, without whom we would be of all men most miserable, despite a huge bacon-wrapped turkey! (Okay, now I can hardly wait until Christmas when I shall fairly mummify our family roast in layers of pork! 😀 )
