Great new video from the Americans United for Life. There’s only one thing here that I don’t fully agree with.

This isn’t about birth control? OK, but the mandate does not just require coverage for sterilization and abortifacient drugs; it also requires coverage for contraception — something the Catholic Church emphatically opposes.

In other words if this mandate is an attack on religious liberty, it is also an attack on the Catholic Church, the only institution of its magnitude that teaches that contraception is intrinsically morally evil.

If the mandate imposed coverage for contraception, not sterilization or abortifacients, the Church would still have to oppose it. This does not lessen the evil of drugs that cause abortion.

A lot of people, however, want to act as if contraception is not the issue, when it is.

This attack on religious liberty, like any attack on religious liberty, is an infringement on a specific right. Whether you are an early Christian in the Roman Empire being forced to bow to an idol of Caesar, a Jew being force to eat pork in the time of the Maccabees, or an American Catholic being forced to pay for contraception coverage, the right being violated boils down to being forced to perform a specific act that repulses your conscience.

In this case the specific act is being forced to pay for contraception and sterilization and abortifacient drugs. Don’t say it’s not about birth control, when obviously it is.

Not saying that it’s not complicated, or that it’s only about contraception. Someone may reasonably say, I have no problem with contraception but I do have a problem with this mandate. I’m not arguing with that person. I would actually agree with that person that the law cannot stand because it’s unconstitutional.

I think the following video does a good job of bringing together differing perspectives on the issus to make the point that this unjust law lacks constitutional grounding and therefore cannot stand.

The focus is shifted from the contraception issue for the whole second half of the video. During the first part of the video, it’s almost all about contraception. So here’s my take on it:

Whether you like it or not, if you are going to face this issue, you are going to have to deal with the issue of contraception. So don’t pretend that it has nothing to do with contraception. Don’t ignore it as if it is not a part of the problem. What do you have to lose by facing the facts?
