If you signed the “We the People” petition asking the White House to rescind the HHS Free Contraception, Sterilizations, and Abortifacient Drugs (paid for by all U.S. employers) Mandate, you likely got back an email response, like the one below, in your inbox sometime last week. As their thoughtful response appears a little one-sided, I’ve added a brief point-for-point commentary at the end of each section. More…

Fr John Bartunek: Straight Talk about Contraception Reply
Although the HHS mandate is clearly a violation of the 1st Amendment and an affront to religious liberty, by reopening and drawing heavy attention to the contraception debate, it offers Catholics the opportunity to clarify the Church’s position on contraception and explain, more importantly, why it holds this teaching. Fr John Bartunek’s short article is a common-sense explanation that actually delivers what it More…
Violate Our Conscience? Not So Fast, HHS 1
Shakespeare famously wrote that conscience makes cowards of us all; perhaps, but it can also bring out the best in us too.
For example, Sir Thomas More famously said, “NEVERTHELESS, it is not for the supremacy that you have sought my blood, but because I would not bend to the marriage!”

Dear HHS: Of Course It’s about Contraception 1
Since the Health and Human Services Department announced its controversial mandate just over two weeks ago, the thrust of most arguments against it have focused on its being an unprecedented attack on religious liberty and freedom of conscience, which it most certainly is.

Each year he repeats the words of that oath along with the faculty of the college on their New Hampshire campus:
With Christian obedience I shall follow what the Bishops, as authentic doctors and teachers of the faith, declare, or what they, as those who govern the Church, establish.
Today, Fahey released an open letter to the College’s representatives in Washington and President Barack Obama saying that his oath of fidelity to the bishops conflicts with the mandate recently announced by the administration which would force the college to pay for things it believes sinful including contraception, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs through their health insurance .
“I will stand by my oath and with my bishops,” he wrote. “I hope that in so doing I will…

Is the Abortion Media Blind? (Are You Kidding?) 2
I was stunned, when I read Ross Douthat’s op-ed, “The Abortion Media’s Blinders,” in The New Times’ Sunday Review, to find the most insightful, not to mention fair and balanced article yet written on the Planned Parenthood vs. Komen fiasco, which dominated the media’s attention at the end of last week. He hit the nail on the head when he More…
